Wooldridge: Health plan for more health plans

Tuesday 5 December 2017

Health plan for more health plans

The Andrews Labor Governments’ well overdue ‘health design, service and infrastructure plan’ is just a plan for more plans.

A major recommendation of the Travis Report in 2015 was that a statewide service and infrastructure plan be developed to identify present and future demand and match recurrent and infrastructure funding to provide transparency for health services and patients.

The government has clearly abandoned Dr Travis’ recommendation, by spending more than two and half years on a document that fails to provide any specifics but rather promises to develop plans ‘over the next couple of years’.

Today, Daniel Andrews has released a report with no specific actions, no timelines and no funding to address Victoria’s future health needs. Instead the report is just a summary of old announcements and passing the buck to future plans to deliver detail.

Infrastructure Victoria’s 30 year strategy specifically avoided this critical and significant area of infrastructure, saying that hospital specific detail would be provided in this health plan, due in mid-2017.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Health, Mary Wooldridge:

This report does not deliver a thing for Victorians waiting for surgery, languishing in emergency departments or ramped in ambulances under Daniel Andrews.

While Victoria’s health infrastructure is under extreme pressure, Daniel Andrews’ new plan is only delivering more talk and no action.

Dr Travis identified the need for a plan with firm commitments, and in response, Daniel Andrews has spent 30 months on a glossy promotional document.
